Sadness in secular Athens is caused by the news that the Zachos Hatzifotiou he passed away at the age of 99, following health problems he was facing.
Something that few people remember is that the well-known journalist was married to her Jenny Karezi in 1962, with their wedding being the ultimate secular event of the time. The two of them had met a few months earlier, in London.
Zachos Hatzifotiou lived in Paris at the time and had been to the British capital for business reasons, while the glamorous protagonist traveled there for “artistic information”, as the report of the time wrote. She herself had described their meeting, in an interview, immediately after the wedding. “He was introduced to me in a Greek house. “I’m so glad” we both said. We met again shortly after, on New Year’s, here in Athens, when Zachos came for vacation. We were very happy again. And a month later, in a flash, hastily, American if you like, we decided together to dance in Filothei”.
“Jenny Carezi separated me from the princess, Irene. He ran wild… He would take the non-theater plane every Monday and come to me for a night so the princess would know. I didn’t want to marry Jenny Karezi at all, because I didn’t want to have a relationship with Greek actresses. Neither with her nor with the other (s.s. Aliki Vougiouklakis). As soon as I married Karezi, he said “I’ll eat him, I’ll eat him”. Women’s jobs of calamity’ had confessed to Happy Day.
Maid of honor was the couple’s dear friend, the shipowner Maya Kalliga. Dressed in jeans and a simple black shirt among the expensive evening ensembles of the rest of the guests, she amazingly danced zeibeki to the beats of the unforgettable Quick Bithikotsis songs. “The best zeibeki in the world”, as Zachos Hatzifotiou characteristically said.
Zachos Hatzifotiou and Jeni Karezi divorced five years later, but the two always remained good friends. About two years ago, the journalist had revealed to THEMA newspaper the reason they had split up.
“Jenny Karezi and I think we were together for four years. Another Jenny in theater and cinema and another at home. Exemplary wife, she cooked. Jenny and I broke up because we hardly saw each other. Her schedule is different, mine is different. When I would come home to sleep, she would get up to go to a morning movie shoot. We lived in the same house, but we were not together. We were only in the corridor.”
