With the view that “A nation that forgets its history, has no future” the Board of Directors of the Skotanian Association of Kalavryta District spearheaded and held an extraordinary event on August 18, 2022 in the village of Skotani, within the framework of the cultural events of the 33rd Skotanian Meeting, with the unveiling of the Monument to the Heroes of the Fallen Patriots of Kokovits who participated in the liberation struggle of 1821 on the occasion of the celebration of the Bicentennial of our National Independence.
In the crowded square of Agios Dimitrios Skotanis, together the village and the members of the Board of Directors. of the Association and with them, the Mayor of Kalavryton, Mr. ATH. Papadopoulos, the President of the Pangalavritian Union Mr. Dimitrios Varvitsiotis, the representative of the Most Reverend Metropolitan Mr. Hieronymou pr. Christos Birbas Hierarchical Commissioner of Kalavryta, the Deputy Mayor of Paion Mr. Georgios Rodopoulos, the President of the Agricultural Dairy Cooperative of Kalavryta Mr. Pavlos Satolias, the Representative of the Local District of Skotani Mr. Petros Rigopoulos, Presidents of Communities and Association Presidents of the Kalavryta District, the Achaian Member of Parliament Angelos Tsigris, Georgios Dalianis, the guardian of traditional music, representatives of organizations and security forces, attended an event of honor and memory for the Kokovite fighters.
The unveiling of the Heroes’ Monument was done by the Mayor of Kalavryta, Mr. Athanasios Papadopoulos and the President of the Association, Mrs. Marianthi Chronopoulou, followed by the laying of wreaths.
This was followed by a greeting by the President Mr. Marianthis Chronopoulos, the Mayor, the representative of the Most Reverend Metropolitan and the Member of Parliament Mr. A. Tsigris, a recitation of a poem written by Konstantinos Nikolopoulos – Kamenianitis especially for the event and the Kokovite-Skotanai fighters and the keynote speech by the President of the Pangalavritian Union, Mr. Dimitrios Varvitsiotis.
In her greeting, the President Mrs. Marianthi Chronopoulou emphasized, among others, “As the Board of Directors of the Skotanai Association, we considered it a duty of honor and memory to inspire hope and optimism for the future that together with the will, determination and belief in its high ideals Our nations, they have led our people to great victories and have placed them in a world standing among the first in the heroic struggles for Freedom and Democracy.
This Hero will be a tribute and the incense of gratitude for the great sacrifice to our immortal heroes-compatriots, the Immortal Generation of 1821.
Paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives defending the honor and integrity of the country is an eternal debt to our history, a constant reminder of our outstanding responsibility and an eternal debt to the heroes and martyrs of Freedom.
It will remind with the fullness of time the greatness of their sacrifice, the blood, the heartbreaks of their souls, the heart-dropping tears that rained and watered our sacred soils and will be an eternal anthem for the defense of Freedom.
The Fighters of our village paid with their blood, their dreams and their ideals for a homeland unenslaved and free because they knew deep inside that Freedom is not given, but conquered. There were the unseen heroes who forged with their own blood for a more beautiful Greece, for a more brilliant homeland. They are the ones who planted and watered with the same blood the most precious tree of dignity and who taught us “how much Freedom is worth and how much it costs”
The Mayor of Kalavryton, Mr. Ath. Papadopoulos, emphasized, among others, that “the Skotanaion Association is the first unique-historical Association that implemented a project for the 200 years since the declaration of the Revolution and the Struggle for our National Independence.”
After the greetings-speeches, the unveilings were held with the Sponsors who participated in the implementation of the Monument and the frame with the names of the Fighters, by the Honorary Presidents of the Dark Association etc. Stavros P. Mougolia and Georgios A. Satolias, the Honorary President of the Pangalavrytian Union Mr. Georgios Kosmas and the Vice-President of the Association Mr. Ioannis Grig. Satolia.
Afterwards, an honorary award was given to the Mayor of Kalavryta, as a sign of recognition of his multi-year, multifaceted and continuous contribution to the development of the 50 years of the Agricultural Dairy Cooperative of Kalavryta and his general contribution to the society and culture of the Municipality of Kalavryta, to the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Kalavryta and Aegialia etc. Hieronymus which plaque was received to be delivered by the representative of pr. 1. to Mr. Athanasios Tzortzis, from the Prophet Ilias (Gerbesi) Kalavryton, who is a writer, historical researcher with a great contribution to our country and after a research he did for more than 15 years, he collected data from the flowers of history and glory of our heroic ancestors, so that he published 7 volumes of his book entitled “HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF THE PROVINCE OF KALAVRYTON.” He devoted endless hours to the National Library’s “Fighters’ Archives” and the State General Archives, retrieving and recording valuable historical facts and documents, as well as forgotten heroes who are now taking their rightful place in history, as well as in his pantheon of heroes. our place.
In this way, as a Board of Directors we were also able to collect, in addition to the research we carried out and from other official bibliographies, the names of the Agonists of our village, as they have been registered in the Register of the Agonists of 1821 and most of them have been honored with the Order of Courage.
2. to Mr. Konstantinos Nikolopoulos-Kamenianitis, from the Kamenians of Kalavryton, who is a Writer-Writer-Historical Researcher etc. and who wrote and on the day of the Apocalypse he recited a poem entitled “TO THE COCK-FIGHTERS IN 1821”
3. to compatriot Theodoros Asimakopoulos, who donated us the sword, a faithful copy of 1821, the pre-eminent weapon of the Greeks with which they fought in the battles for the Freedom of our country and which was placed in the Monument, on the day of the revelations.
