The United States “takes seriously” Vladimir Putin’s threat to use nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine, a White House spokesman said today, announcing that “the consequences will be severe” if he follows through.
“This is irresponsible rhetoric from a nuclear power. But it’s not unusual given the way he’s been talking for the last seven months,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said in an interview with ABC.

“We monitor as best we can their strategic arrangement so that we are able to change ours if the need arises. Right now nothing dictates that there is a need,” he added, demonstrating the West’s anger, but also deep concern, for Putin’s new plans.
Behind the statements about a sermon – evidence of Russian failure and Putin’s desperation, there is also anxiety about how far the Russian president is willing to pull the rope.
Indicative is the reaction of Britain, which from the first moment spoke of an alarming escalation and threats that must be taken seriously.
