In his post in English, Kyriakos Mitsotakis reproduces the statement of the member states of the European Council against the annexation of Donbass to Russia after the referendums and emphasizes that Greece and the EU stand firmly by the side of Ukraine.
They stand firmly on the side of Ukraine
“We will never recognize the illegal annexation of Ukraine’s territories. Russia undermines the rules-based international order and violates Ukraine’s fundamental rights to independence and sovereignty. Greece and the EU stand firmly by the side of Ukraine,” the Prime Minister emphasizes.

Illegal referendums and invalid decisions
“Russia endangers global security,” the members of the European Council stress, underlining that they “categorically” reject and unequivocally condemn “Russia’s illegal annexation of the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson.” “We will never recognize” the “illegal” annexations, says the European Council announcement.
“We do not and will never recognize the illegal ‘referendums’ that Russia conducted as a pretext for this further violation of Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, nor their falsified and illegal results. We will never recognize this illegal attachments. These decisions are void and cannot produce any legal effect. Crimea, Kherson, Zaporizhia, Donetsk and Luhansk are Ukraine. We call on all states and international organizations to categorically reject this illegal annexation,” the member states note.
At the same time, they underline that in view of Russia’s war of aggression as well as Moscow’s latest escalation, the European Union stands resolutely on the side of Ukraine and its people.
