On May 4, American comedian Dave Chappelle was performing at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles when a man appeared on stage to try to attack him.
Since this incident, which took place during the “Netflix Is a Joke” festival, many questions have arisen about the security of the event: how the suspect, 23-year-old Isaiah Lee, managed to enter the precincts of the building with a knife and how did the latter get on stage while escaping the security guards, supposed to protect the artists and control the crowd?
A strongly criticized company
As reported bythe security of the show that evening was provided by the one of the largest event security companies in North America, which has worked to protect the crowd at thousands of concerts, shows and sporting events in the United States, including Coachella and the Super Bowl .
This company, although renowned, has nevertheless been strongly criticized in the past for its management of previous gatherings. Among them, the Astroworld festival, organized by rapper Travis Scott in November 2021, where ten people were trampled to death but also the Route 91 Harvest country music festival in Las Vegas in 2017, where 59 people were shot dead.
According to the British daily, the company, which presents itself as the “world leader in crowd management and event security for the entertainment and sporting events industries”, has also been sued dozens of times by participants. , employees and families of victims.
Numerous security breaches noted
During the Dave Chappelle show in Los Angeles, the mediaspoke to an unnamed CSC employee. This one, hired just for the evening, says that some employees present at the event had never worked in the field of security before and therefore had no experience with metal detectors or bag control.
He adds that the agents were instructed that evening to quickly check the bags to get people into the room quickly so that they did not miss the start of the show.
“We were told that there would be a lot of people and that we had to get people in as quickly as possible”, assures the employee. “There were no details on what it meant and how to do it – just had to get them in as quickly as possible.”
Tehran Von Ghasri, comedian and friend of Dave Chappelle who performed on stage during the Netflix evening, a few hours before the incident, also confided to BuzzFeed having witnessed security breaches during the evening.
Sitting in the VIP section, the comedian claims to have seen the suspect slipping over the barrier with his black hoodie up and carrying a backpack. Worried, he declares to be turned to a security guard just behind him to report this suspicious behavior.
“She ignored me,” he says. “And in less than a minute, [le suspect] climbed onto the stage and knocked Chappelle down.”
Dave Chappelle was unhurt in the attack. Last Thursday, the Los Angeles district attorney charged the suspect, Isaiah Lee, with four misdemeanors, including assault and battery. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
