The president of the European Association of Associations (ECA) and Paris Saint Germain, Nasser Al Khelaifi, speaking at the ECA General Assembly today in Istanbul, defended UEFA’s new financial Fair Play, referred to the “memorandum of cooperation” with the European federation until 2030, describing it as “the most important development in European football”, while he set the first priority to ensure economic stability.
He also referred to the recovery fund, the distribution of revenue to clubs and the new format of competitions from the 2024/25 season, but also the importance of diversity, analyzing the five strategic priorities of the ECA.

It is worth noting that the members of the ECA also include six Greek teams, AEK, Asteras Tripoli, Atromitos, Olympiacos, PAOK and Panathinaikos.
“Financial stability in European football”
“Our first priority is to ensure financial stability in European football. The planned Recovery Fund is critical for our clubs. Covid-19 has affected us all, clubs of all sizes. The new financial sustainability rules are a positive development. Rules control costs. They encourage investment and new investors. They will help ensure the sustainability of football. But we have to be careful. We must think long-term, not short-term,” said Al Khelaifi, starting his speech.
Memorandum of cooperation with UEFA
“Our second priority is building stronger relationships at ECA. We should be proud that the voice of our clubs is at the heart of European football’s decision-making.
Our joint action with UEFA is the most important development in European football in recent times. It is based on a relationship of trust and is an example of progressive reform. I am pleased to announce that UEFA and ECA have signed a Letter of Intent to enter into a new Memorandum of Cooperation until 2030. This will make our partnership even stronger. We will work closely with UEFA on the new competition format from the 2024/25 season. There will be more exciting games. Our income will increase,” he added.
The distribution of revenues
“Revenue sharing is the next big issue for European football. The distribution must be fair. We will continue to build relationships with all stakeholders. FIFA, UEFA, CAF, confederations, leagues, national federations and fans.
Our relationship with organizations such as the IOC, Formula One and Harvard Business School shows that ECA is open and promotes ideas” added the ECA president.
The benefits for ECA members and the “thank you” to Sulukou
“Our third priority is to create better benefits for ECA members.
Our fourth priority is Diversity and Inclusion. At our General Assembly in Geneva we pledged to expand our membership. I’m glad we made progress. I thank Lina Souloukou for all her work,” he said, referring to the Greek lawyer, former general manager of Olympiakos.
“Women’s football continues to grow. Thanks to all our female players, you are an inspiration. However, we must be realistic. Women’s football needs major investment to continue to grow.
Our fifth priority is the renewed spirit and values of the ECA. Over the past year, we have shown our strength when we work together. We should not focus on the past, but people should not forget where we came from a year ago. Some tried to separate us. We talk, we share ideas, we listen. We do and offer more. This is the spirit that will shape the future of European club football. We must move forward. We are a family.”
